How to make Moong daal/yellow split lentil recipe

This is one of the most traditional way of cooking yellow lentils , which is really simple to cook and delicious in taste.

Hello all!!Winter has been started and so the cravings for delicious food too..Today I have brought a very simple and flavorful yellow lentils recipe..Its a simple dish..the texture of this dish is more on the thicker side..It is made directly using the pressure cooker and the ingredients used are very minimum..Even if it is a very simple recipe, it tatses really delicious..it has an added flavor of cloves and cardamom..

In India lentils are a regular dish and we have it anytime of the day, like with tortilla or rice..It is called as daal..So as we all know there are a varieties of lentils available in the grocery..Yellow split lentils are known to be the most protenaceous and when cooked the right way, it tastes delicious too..Its always better to include lentils in our food as they have many health benefits..As I have heard from the elders in my home, let me explain some of the key benefits of using cloves and cardamom in it..I would say spices like cloves or cardamom are not too common to use it food items but during the season of winter it is said that these spices carries warming properties and also makes our food too flavorful..Also I have added bay leaf to add an authentic mild taste..

Ok so let’s start cooking the yummy yummy yellow lentil which is simple enough by listing the ingredients first..

Ingredients:-

2 cups of yellow split lentils/Moong daal

3 table spoon oil

1 bay leaf

3 cloves

4 cardamoms

1 tea spoon cumin seeds

1/3 teaspoon turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon chilli powder

1 table spoon sugar

1 table spoon salt

So, these are the only basic ingredients we need to make this simple and plain Moong daal and no doubt its delicious..Also I believe that minimum ingredients let the food tatse well without suffocating it with so many flavors.

Method

The process is to make plain moong daal/yellow split lentils is absolutely simple.. Just take a pan and put it on high flame..let it be dry completely..then add oil.let the oil be warm..put the moomg daal into it..mix well..roast in medium flame for 4 to 5 minutes to make it light brown it texture..Don’t over do it orelse it will impact the taste of the food..

Now switch off the gas and pour water over the daal to let it soak for atleast 10 minutes..The reason behind roasting the lentils before cooking is, it gives it a very different tatse when cooked, also it lets it hold the texture of the lentils..

Now wash off the lentils well to remove any access oil 2 to 3 times and stain the water using a stainer..Take a pressure cooker..put it on the gas..add another 2 table spoon of oil into it..let the oil be hot..then add the cumin seeds into it..as soon as it starts to pop, put the cloves and cardamom and bay leaf..then add the lentils into it..mix well. add the spices like the chilli powder , turmeric powder and salt..mix all the ingredients well..add the sugar according to the mentioned quantity..you can skip it if you does not like your food mild sweet..Now add 1 and 1/2 cup water to cook the daal..close the lid of the cooker and wait it to whistle for 3 to 4 times..don’t over cook as yellow split lentils gets cooked up sooner than the other lentils..

You can cook it in another way by boiling the lentils first and then sautéing it in the spices and flavors..Both process are equally ok.
